Skip the Expensive Gym and Still Get a Great Workout!

We live in a day where the majority of our population are overweight or face health problems concerning their weight. With the fitness craze hitting hard, many people are turning to the gym to get into shape. However, because of today’s economy, many people cannot make their dollar stretch far enough to pay for a gym membership.

Even with special deals that gyms offer, many people either cannot find the money or time. Many gym memberships are wasted because people cannot find the time. Fortunately, there are many different options for the interested individual. From online personal training to making your own home gym there are many different avenues to explore.

At-home alternatives are a great solution to expensive gym memberships. You can exercise any time of the day or night, however you like, without wasting gasoline, running up lots of miles on your car, paying for higher car insurance rates, paying for higher car repair bills, etc. In many stores, there is an entire devoted exercise section, where you can find equipment, clothing, books, and videos.

Magazines are a Simple Alternative

Several magazines now offer at-home workouts in nearly every issue, including Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Shape, Muscle & Fitness, and Cosmopolitan. Some are marketed specifically for women, while others are designed for men.

In addition to exercise routines, many magazines offer an accompaniment food section, helping you to make smarter choices in your eating habits. This in turn will help your overall weight loss.

Fitness sections are being featured in more and more magazines, and expanding in the magazines they already existed in. In fitness sections of modern magazines you can find:

  • Healthy, low-fat recipes
  • High-protein recipes
  • Cardio workouts
  • Toning workouts
  • Muscle-building workouts

DVD’s: Another Affordable Alternative

Another way to get an effective workout without paying a fortune is to invest in a few workout DVDs. These are readily available at many stores, ranging from superstores to smaller neighborhood stores. The great thing about workout DVD’s is you have a trainer showing you the proper way to position yourself for maximum calorie burning.

No matter what exercise you like, you can find a DVD for it, including cardio, yoga, pilates, weight training, and dancing. These are often packed with an intense workout, resulting in an effective fitness program.

People love workout DVD’s because:

  • Affordable
  • Enjoyable
  • Customizable workouts
  • Adjustable difficulty
  • Workout in the privacy of your own home

Find a New Best Friend

The easiest way to burn off extra calories for free is to take a daily walk. Some people buy a pedometer to see exactly how far they are walking, but walking your new pet will be more than enough. You can adopt a dog from an animal shelter, but it is better to adopt an older pup. That way, you will be able to walk or run, and they will be able to keep up. Best of all, you will have your walking companion for years to come.

Dogs love exercise, which can help you reach your fitness goals. You will need to walk your pet every day for at least a half hour. Aside from that, playing with your new pup can help as well, as long as you are completely active.

Invest in Home Gym Equipment

If you are serious about your fitness routine, yet do not have the time or will to visit the gym, there is always the option of investing in gym equipment. This can be anywhere from full body machines to a basic set of dumbbells. You can buy basic workout sets, such as pilates, yoga, or weight training sets, for the cost of one or two months gym membership.

Small Changes Make the Difference

In your everyday life, you can make small changes to make a big difference in your fitness level, thus eliminating the need to go to the gym. These are simple, including:

  1. Taking the stairs
  2. Eating more salads
  3. Pack lunch instead of eating out
  4. Walk around the block on your lunch break
  5. Park in the back of the parking lot

Fitness doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Incorporating more activity with better food choices is just as effective, if not more so, than going to a gym.

Ideas On How To Exercise At Home

If you’re interested in getting into better shape but don’t really want to join a public gym, there are plenty of ways to work around this.  Many people are fast to think that being in good shape means you’ll have to spend hours and hours at the gym, but this isn’t the case.

If you can devote 30 minutes to exercise per day, doing it right in the comfort of your own home, you can see noticeable differences in just a few weeks time.

Let’s have a look at a few of the best ways to exercise at home.

Climb Stairs

Looking for a fast way to get in some cardio?  While at the gym you might have chosen to hop onto the treadmill, bike, or elliptical, when exercising at home you likely don’t have one of these machines sitting in your living room.

But what you do likely have is a set of stairs.  Stair running can be just as effective, if not even more effective than running is when it comes to burning off body fat, so don’t think twice.

Run up and down the stairs three to four times in a row and then take a 45 second rest and walk around at a slow pace.  Then repeat this process another four to five times and you will have an absolutely fantastic fat burning workout.

Try Jump Rope

Another alternative if running stairs isn’t quite your thing is jumping rope.  Here again, jump rope is an intense calorie burner, allowing you to burn even more calories than a fast run would.

Be sure to be patient with yourself with this exercise however as it can take some getting used to.

Try and skip for one minute straight if you can, then allow yourself to rest for a minute.  Alternate between on and off periods ten to twelve times to create this skipping workout.

Get A Set Of Adjustable Dumbbells

For the resistance training element of things, if you want to firm up your body fast, getting a set of adjustable dumbbells is the way to go.  You can perform movements to target the entire body with these including lunges, squats, shoulder presses, chest presses lying on the floor, bent over rows, as well as bicep curls, tricep extensions, and lateral raises.

Perform eight to twelve reps of each exercise moving from one right to the next as quickly as you can.  Rest for two minutes once the circuit has been completed and then perform once more through and you’ll be well on your way to adding more muscle definition.

Try Resistance Bands

Finally, if you aren’t so fond of dumbbells, another alternative is to use resistance bands.  These are becoming very popular among those who choose to workout at home because they can easily be stored away in a dresser drawer when not in use.

Hold each end of the resistance band in either of your hands and perform many of the same exercises you would with your dumbbells such as squats, shoulder presses, chest presses, bicep curls, lateral raises, and bent over rows.

So there you have some quick tips for creating an effective and fast at home workout.  If you can commit to doing your resistance training exercises twice per week and your cardio workout twice per week as well, while also combining this with a great diet and a supplement such as Phen375 to boost your metabolic rate, you will have a killer fat burning formula that will get you the body you’re after.

What If The Weight Loss Product You’re Buying is Poison?

These days, obese people suffer less from obesity related problems and more from the side effects of weight loss products that they use. If you don’t exercise caution when buying a weight loss product, it can be harmful for your health. Doing your due diligence and arming yourself with the correct knowledge is very much essential, especially when it comes to weight loss. Before buying any weight loss product, make sure that you have researched it thoroughly. During your search, you should try to get as much information as possible about the product, its good and bad effects, the ingredients that it is made up of, etc., as these things can seriously affect your health, either positively or negatively! In this article I will tell you how to know a good weight loss product from the bad ones.

To start with, you shouldn’t accept everything at face value. The internet is littered with both good and bad information, and more often than not, the bad information overshadows the good one. There is a lot of misleading information regarding several weight loss products doing the rounds of the World Wide Web, and in case you don’t know, the perpetrators of this misleading information are either the product manufacturers themselves or their partners who promote the products on their behalf. You may come across websites offering you what seems to be ‘honest reviews’ regarding your product, but is that really so? Most of these reviews are filled up with dishonest, misleading and fraudulent information, and if you rely on this information when purchasing a weight loss product, you are doomed!

I will give an example to clarify my point. You maybe aware of the fact that there are several websites out there claiming to offer natural weight loss products. Well, at one point of time, some experts of the Johns Hopkins University surveyed those sites in order to find out whether the outrageous claims made by these sites are true or not. Not surprisingly, many websites failed the test; some failed to give information regarding the correct dosage of the supplement, others failed to reveal about the harmful side effects of the products, and yet others failed to offer information regarding the ingredients of the products. Believe it or not, lack of such vital pieces of information can harm the consumer more than anyone else.

So, how to separate the wheat from the chaff? As a rule of thumb, you should avoid products whose claims seem to be outrageous or impossible. An old saying goes that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If you find a website that claims that their product can do miracles for you, chances are that reality is exactly the opposite – that is, it will harm your body in a ‘miraculous’ way.

Your best bet is to consult a doctor or a nutritionist before you even decide to buy any weight loss pill. Your doctor should be able to clarify what side effects the consumption of a particular medicine may have, and this piece of information alone will save you from a lot of troubles down the road!

Can HCG Help You Lose Weight?

The weight loss industry is rife with fads, and every other day, I see a new fad coming up. Even more surprising than the rapid innovation of fads is how easily the common people are accepting these fads without thinking twice abut possible repercussions. People hope to lose weight quickly with the help of these fad products, but if you ask me, I never believe in fads, and never will! In this article I will tell you about the latest weight loss fad called HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) and how far it can help you lose weight.

To start with, if you are wondering that HCG is just another drug, you are dead wrong! It is just a hormone which is already present in the human body. The hormone is found in abundance in the body of pregnant women. This is the reason why any woman who tests positive for it is confirmed to be pregnant.

People didn’t know about the benefits of HCG on overweight people until a notorious author called Kevin Trudeau came up with a book that claimed that HCG can indeed help people lose weight. For those who don’t know, Kevin Trudeau has already spent a considerable amount of time in jail for several violations of FTC guidelines. While Kevin Trudeau claims that HCG is a miraculous hormone that can help people lose weight quicker than any other weight loss supplement, there is no medical or scientific evidence that backs up this claim. Not even the manufacturers who produce a synthesized version of this hormone claim that it is beneficial for obese people. It is only a handful of doctors and experts who are claiming that they have proof of its effectiveness on overweight people.

For almost forty years, several tests and studies were done on HCG to prove the validity of these claims. A lot of research was done regarding the effectiveness of HCG on overweight people. No study or research done till date has been able to prove that HCG indeed helps one lose weight. So how can the doctors claim the opposite?

Well, in case you don’t know, if you opt for HCG treatment, doctors will also ask you to follow a low calorie diet. So whether it is the low calorie diet or the HCG hormone that is helping people to lose weight is not clear.
Last but not the least, HCG has been banned in the US long time ago. If you want to purchase synthetic HCG, you will need to purchase it either from the black market or import it from another country, both of which can prove very costly for you!

If you take my advice, I would recommend that until the effectiveness of HCG is fully proved, you should just follow the old method of healthy food plan and exercises. Health food plan doesn’t mean that you will have to diet; just eat lost of raw vegetables and fruits, and drink lots of water, and make sure that you avoid the fatty and junk foods as much as possible! This is a proven way to weight loss success.

3 Weight Loss Myths That Can Put Your Life in Danger

If you read health magazines regularly, you are sure to come across a lot of tips regarding to weight loss. Some of these tips actually work, and others don’t. The ones that generally don’t work are those that suggest fad diets, weight loss supplements and pills. The tips that actually work for everybody are always simple: that of diet and exercise. However, the weight loss industry is ridden with myths and misleading information, and people often tend to twist the truths, either because of their own advantage or out of plain ignorance. In this article I will discuss three such weight loss myths.

1. Myth#1: Spot reduction of fat is possible: Not at all true, and I am sure that any weight loss expert will unanimously agree to this. You cannot force your body to spot reduce your fat under any circumstances, no matter what type of workouts you do. If you do only crunches and leg lifts frequently in the hope of reducing belly fat, you will notice that instead of reducing your belly fat, you will reduce the muscle mass that resides beneath the abdomen. For this reason, your focus should not be on crunches and leg lifts alone; you should also follow a healthy diet that would speed up your metabolic rate and help you burn fat fast!

2. Myth#2: A drastic cut down on calorie intake reduces your body fat: This myth has pushed many a person on the brink of crash dieting. People take to crash dieting in the hope of shedding those extra pounds, least realizing that crash dieting harm their bodies instead of helping them. As a matter of fact, when you starve or fast, your body realizes that you are going to kill it and then it goes into the starvation mode. While in starvation mode, your body slows down your metabolic rate and burns your muscles (instead of fat, which is kept in reserve) for producing energy. This way, you don’t lose much fat at all; if anything, you lose your valuable muscles. And once you return to your normal diet, you will gain extra weight!

3. Myth#3: Cardio exercises alone will help you lose weight: While it is true that cardio exercises can help you lose fat, it is not true that this is the only type of weight loss exercises available; don’t forget the aerobics. As a matter of fact, the amount of fat you will lose doing either cardio or aerobics is almost same. On the other hand, weight lifting is better than both cardio and aerobics, in that it not only helps you burn fat during the workout, but even after that!

I sincerely hope that this article has successfully brought the real weight loss truths before you!

4 Exercise Tips For the Working Mom

With the pressures of daily life, sometimes working out regularly can become difficult for a working mom. I know it because I am a working mother myself. I have been working even before marriage. The excessive stress at office, coupled with the stress of taking care of my family, sometimes make it impossible for me to stick to my weight loss plan.

That said, I don’t let stress become an excuse for avoiding exercises altogether! Every one of us has only 24 hours allotted in a day, so if you can fit in all of your daily activities within that 24-hour period, how is it that you cannot find time for exercises? Don’t you brush teeth, or take a shower everyday? Why do you do these? Because they are part of your daily routine. You know that if you don’t brush your teeth regularly, you will suffer from tooth decay. Similarly, if you don’t take a shower regularly, you will have skin diseases. But do you know that if you don’t workout regularly, you will become fat?

It is not right to use the ‘lack of time’ as an excuse for avoiding exercises. Let’s be honest here: you are probably either afraid of exercises or just don’t know where to start! In either case, this article will help you achieve your fitness goals!

1. Find a friend to workout with: Working out alone is not always an enjoyable experience. However, if you can have a friend workout with you, chances are that you will start loving your workouts instead of hating them! Plus seeing someone else working out in the gym will motivate you to continue with your exercise routine! If you know another working mom who has the same fitness goals as you, then rope in her as well!

2. Get an IPOD: Take an IPOD with you whenever you hit the gym. This is a great way of kicking out the boredom out of your workout routine!

3. Do what you love: There are exercises that you probably don’t love to do; if you force yourself to do these exorcises it is only a matter of time before you become bored with them! If, instead, you find exercises that you actually love, then it becomes easier!

4. Start it slow: If you have never exercised in life, it is only natural that you will be afraid to hit the gym. Ignore people who say that you have to exercise daily in order to lose weight. Instead, try to take it easy: start by working out only for fifteen to twenty minutes per day, for two or three days a week. As your body gets accustomed to your new workout routine, you can scale up the intensity of your workouts!

Geeky Treadmills

People don’t consider geekyness and weight loss to go hand in hand, but the thing that might bug you out is this: Weight loss can be one of the geekyest things there is! If you ever read an in depth forum on topics such as nutrition you will understand what I mean. The geek factor is immense!

For every forum full of geeks talking about the pros and cons of a certain graphics card, you will find a similar topic where roided out beefcakes are comparing the “loading” qualities of a certain supplement, with some impressive combination of numbers and extreme letters in the title.

I’m just pointing this out to make fun, but in reality the mechanics of weight loss can be extremely pleasing to the left brainer’s mind. You can immerse yourself for hours in the science and pseudo science that exists on the myriad of topics, and even (Excel alert!) GRAPH your progress!

There was a time when I used to do just that, before I settled into my new low maintenance workout (I.e. schlepping furniture at a bar…), I once had a spreadsheet with the calorific intake of my daily diet, including every baked beans tin, every banana etc.

In order to truly geek out, you really want access to a piece of workout equipment, such as this programmable treadmill, which allows you to monitor your daily calorie burning goodness. Without the ability to accurately record your workouts, it all just becomes a bit of a stab in the dark, a little too much empirical evidence, and as geeks, we know this is completely unacceptable!

Have fun with monitoring your progress. Watch your weight change exhibit an inverse logarithmic proportionality with your daily ice cream intake. Plot those regression curves! And hopefully at the end of it all you’ll be fit as a fiddle!

Lose weight by walking

Every day in our life; one thing we always do is to walk. Go down the stairs; go up till the 16th floor of the building, walk to the other street and so on. However, not many people realize that walking is one of the most effective calorie burners around. So, for those who want to learn how to lose weight then you better listen and take down notes.

Walking is an effective exercise because it is one of the most common and convenient things people do, and that brisk walking has been proven by countless researches to be an effective calorie burner. It can make your heart beat faster, pump more blood, make your metabolism faster.

Brisk walking can be done any time of the day without the need to spend plenty of time with it. Just by 20- 30 minutes of brisk walking can be a huge help in burning calories. But beware; brisk walking done solely without following a balanced diet can never be that effective. Daily exercise and a balanced healthy diet should go hand in hand when it comes to losing weight. For the best way to lose weight, it is important to be as physically active as possible, without overexerting your body, and walking is a great way to achieve that.

Walking can be very helpful especially to those busy people who don’t have enough time to engage themselves to go to the nearest gym on regular basis, or even jog early in the morning. Walking can be practically done anywhere. Instead of riding a cab to go to the nearest mall, try walking. Not yet convinced? Then why you don’t give it a try? Try to walk your way home on a daily basis. Combine your efforts with a balanced diet and you will see results in just a few months. What is important is that you need to be consistent on your efforts. If you decide to walk for weight loss then do it regularly for a number of months (at least 2-3 times per week for 20 minutes minimum).

Slowly but surely, take one step at a time. Never be in a hurry, that’s not good. You just have to believe in yourself no matter how hard it is. Convince yourself that it is for your own good, no one can help you but yourself.

15 Apps To Help You Beat the Freshman 15

Whether you’re a college freshman or not you have at least heard about the ’Freshman 15’ – your ‘intro weight’ to college thanks to those numerous dorm room pizza deliveries, Chinese food runs, lack of time to exercise, and even the school cafeteria dinners available to you late at night.

Lucky for you there’s an app for everything and this includes helping you avoid the ‘Freshman 15’. So I have compiled a list of 15 of the best apps that will help you beat that annoying weight gain and keep you fit and healthy through all your college years.

Web

  1. Daily Burn – This app is great, it keeps track of your daily water intake, your daily caloric intake, and even your activity (or non daily activity). My only problem with this app is that it’s a little too great at it’s job. It EMAILS you when you aren’t tracking your foods and includes inspirational messages within your email. Who doesn’t feel bad when you receive that in your email as you are scarfing down a tasty Krispy Kream doughnut. This app keeps you on track!
  2. Lose A Dress Size – You’ve always imagined yourself with 5 or 10 extra pounds off of your body or you find yourself constantly looking back at what once was your body, well now with this app you can LITERALLY show you with the weight loss. This service shows you a before and after of yourself based on the pounds you expect to lose. You have to try it. I also like trying multiple services to see myself in numerous angles and photos so if you are anything like me try – Weight Mirror which is also available on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
  3. Quit Smoking – We’ve all seen and heard all the negative health effects of smoking, but the weight gain alone would make anyone want to stop. Well you can easily quit smoking with this web app. The great thing about this app is that you aren’t alone, you work as a community to get to the goal and over time can see how many years and how much money you’ve saved over time by quitting.
  4. Double Check MD - All weight gain does not come from overeating and lack of activity believe it or not, for some students, health issues are unknowingly the true issue behind weight gain and this app will help you get closer to solving the underlying problem. Double Check MD checks your problem against the symptoms of many medical issues and the side-effects of many drugs on the market. Knowing your problem will help you reach your weight goals and prevent the ‘Freshman 15’ in no time.
  5. Diets In Review - Haven’t found the right diet for you? It’s ok, this app will do it for you. It will connect you to communities of people that have tried ‘that new diet’ and give you the real feedback. Not only do you get the real deal on any diet plan you’ve heard of, but a TON of healthy recipes to boot.

Windows

  1. Weight Mania - Weight Mania is yet another app that will track your calories during the day, except it’s available on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch, and online.
  2. GymGoal Lite – This app gives you access to over 200 exercises you can perform, which is perfect for those random dorm room spurts of energy in your dorm gym (who has room for a dorm room gym) or the late night trip to the school gym. This app is also available on the iPhone.

Mac

  1. Yummy Soup - Encourages you to actually use those helpful burners in your dorm room rather than your fingers to order your favorite pizza. Yummy Soup helps you find recipes of any type and best of all you can enter your own and keep track of it on your Mac – very cool!
  2. Calorie King – Calorie King is your ultimate Mac food diary. You can track your weight over time, input your goals, your sodium intake, and of course your daily caloric intake. This app is so feature filled, it’s just too many to mention in this post. With this app, your classmates will wonder why you look so fit!
  3. Trail Runner X – This app is for those that love everything trails – bike trails, walking trails, and hiking trails. You can plan your route for your desired distance and log how far you have traveled during the week. Now just invite the classmates or roomates on those trails with you and you have yourself a healthy field trip.

iPhone/iPod

  1. Eat This Not That - All of us need help once in while when we are out making food choices from our favorite fast food restaurants and this app is like having your own personal trainer/chef in your pocket. This app guides you in the right direction when you must make the decision between a Burger King salad and a Taco Bell 3 Layer Burrito.
  2. Lose It – Lose It! is a great app I actually use myself and fortunately and unfortunately it tracks every single think I eat easily. Lose It also tracks your daily activity and even keeps track of your fitness goals with a nice chart during the week. This app totally eliminates all your good ‘I can’t workout because….’ excuses (sadly).
  3. Whole Foods iPhone – There’s nothing better than having great, quick, tasty recipes at your fingertips to keep the weight down. It’s even better when those recipes are healthy and the Whole Foods iPhone app provides just that. The Whole Foods app let’s you access hundreds of healthy Whole Foods recipes and even has a bonus helpful grocery list inside that I use all the time. It’s very helpful!

Android

  1. Fast Food Counter – Do you notice every time you go out to eat, the only thing hard to find are the nutrition facts. Well this app makes it easy to find the nutrition facts of food from the most popular fast food chains around. Hey, if you look at the calories before you eat it, you may not commit to you favorite fattening item on the list or maybe you will just use it as a guide to figure out how many sit ups you have to do this afternoon. (Also available on the iPhone)
  2. Calorie Counter - This app also keeps track of your calories during the day, super helpful to take on the go and always have with you. No excuse to not track the food you are eating! (Also available on the BlackBerry and the iPhone)

Now that you have all the tools you need to prevent or beat the Freshman 15, actually use them. I know it takes discipline to stay in shape, but maybe these apps can help with that and your ideal body is only an app away.
